What is Botox?
Botox is a naturally occurring substance that helps to diminish the look of wrinkles and fine lines on your face and neck. Botox is a muscle relaxer. Most patients use Botox for problem areas like the forehead, upper eyelids, neck, and the areas around the brow. A unit is a measurement used to determine the amount of Botox given, for instance, some treatment areas need only 5 units while others may use 20. The effects of Botox can last 3-6 months,
How does a Botox treatment at the Body Bar Medspa work?
Over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, causing wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet to form over time. Normally when we squint, frown, or make other facial expressions, our nerves release a neurotransmitter chemical, known as acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter binds to receptors within the muscle to make it contract. Wrinkle relaxers like Botox works by binding to the acetylcholine receptors, and blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles.
After a muscle has been injected, the nerves still send the signal to the muscle to contract, and the acetylcholine is still released, but is unable to bind to the muscle, resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines. The binding process typically begins within about 48 hours from the time it is injected into the muscle, and results typically become noticeable within 7 to 10 days. While results are often most noticeable in dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear when a muscle contracts), it can also help soften wrinkles that are present even without muscle contraction. If you’re serious about improving the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, it may be just the right treatment option for you.
